How to Migrate Windows disk to new RAID drive

Have you ever tried to change your bios settings from IDE to RAID to either migrate your Windows OS disk to a RAID 1 (mirrored) drive or to add a RAID 0 (stripped) data drive only to find your system BSOD’s (Blue Screen of Death). Well the good news is it is possible to do this.

– shut down your system
– add the new disks to your system
– restart system and enter bios
– switch from IDE to RAID
– build your RAID configured drive
– Boot your system into SAFE mode (this is the critical step as it allows Windows to install the RAID drivers on your system)
– reboot Windows normally
– Now you can verify that the RAID drivers are loaded
– Reboot system using you disk cloning tool
– Clone you Windows OS disk to the new RAID volume
– restart windows using the new RAID volume (with require a BIOS change to point to RAID volume)
– Windows should now work properly on new RAID volume without BSOD

How to Migrate WordPress/Mysql from Ubuntu 12.04 32bit to Ubuntu 14.04 64bit

Introduction
I had a Ubuntu LAMP server running multiple WordPress sites. The Original install was done on Ubuntu 10.04 32bit server and later upgraded to 12.02 32bit. With the recent release of Ubuntu 14.04 only in 64bit I had to figure out how to migrate everything to a new installation.

After many failed attempts, I figured out a successful procedure as describe below:

The Tax System Explained in Beer

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100…If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this…

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.

The fifth would pay $1.

The sixth would pay $3.

The seventh would pay $7.

The eighth would pay $12.

The ninth would pay $18.

The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that’s what they decided to do…

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve ball. “Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20”. Drinks for the ten men would now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men? The paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share?

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.

So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using, and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

And so, the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving).

The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% saving).

The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% saving).

The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% saving).

The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% saving).

The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% saving).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.

“I only got a dollar out of the $20 saving,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, “but he got $10!”

“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!”

“That’s true!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back, when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!”

“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison, “we didn’t get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!”
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how our tax system works. The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

Money for Nothing Banned!

Dire Straits track Money for Nothing has been banned from public broadcast in Canada – after receiving just one complaint 25 years after its release.

The decision came after a listener complained that the broadcast of an unedited version of the song was “extremely offensive” to gay, lesbian and bisexual people.

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) concluded that ‘faggot,’ when used to describe a homosexual man, is a word ‘that, even if entirely or marginally acceptable in earlier days, is no longer so.’

The hit single came out on the band’s fifth album, Brothers in Arms, in May 1985 and won a Grammy for best rock performance the following year. The song was supposed to be about a couple of working class guys watching MTV and complaining about pampered rock stars.

As a Canadian, I think this is a classic example of political correctness gone too far. The CBSC is a bunch of “faggots”!

Enough Already!

More snow today! The forecast calls for an additional 30-50cm this weekend as we inch toward the record of 444.1 centimeters set in 1971.

Ottawa is really struggling from the second major storm this week.

Our plans to travel to the Pocono’s on Sunday look like they may be in jeopardy, but hopefully the snow will let up soon. We are looking forward to some time off skiing and relaxing.

The Great American Race

I am a NASCAR fan and I really enjoyed this years Daytona 500, however, I am getting increasingly frustrated with the boring finishes.

Speedweeks was great with the time trials, the Gatorade shutouts and the media build up to the big race. I love the newer faster cars with the bigger restricter plates and better acceleration at high speed. The new drivers and teams made for lots of pre-race drama.

The race was exciting, 16 leaders, 42 lead changes, 150 + laps with only 2 yellow flags and then the wheels fell off. 6 in the last 50 with 2 in the last 10! 5 of the last 10 laps were under caution. BORING! I would much rather see a long run to the finish.

Congratulations to Ryan Newman, Kurt Busch and the Penske team on winning. The last 2 laps at least were exciting.
